The World Poker Tour is a collection of Texas hold 'em poker tournaments held internationally (currently focused on the US but expanding worldwide, for example a recent event was the Grand Prix de Paris). The TV show has been credited with causing the boom in the popularity of Poker from 2003/4. The WPT Online poker room is directly tied into the WPT brand and offers the benefits of satellites to WPT tournaments and large sign up bonuses. The WPT was started by producer Stephen Lipscomb in 2002 and has gone from strength to strength since then, with TV coverage now extended to 116 countries. Former model Shana Hiatt served as the show host and sideline reporter in its first three seasons and former newscaster Courtney Friel took over the host role for the fourth season in 2005-06. The WPT features most of the world's professional players, with regular appearances by Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu and Gus Hanson. There's always room for newcomers though and regular surprise showings by online qualifiers often make the news. There are also regular Ladies Nights and special events to keep the crowds watching - and playing.
